Information
Patrick Geddes (1854-1932) remains a little-known figure in the history of town planning in Francor Spain. As the inventor of regionalism and the ‘regional survey’, an advocate of ‘conservative surgery’ in opposition to the ‘clean slate’, a promoter of local democracy and citizen participation, and a precursor of environmentalism, his work anticipated many of the issues now under debate. This dossier looks at his contribution, the genealogy of his ideas, his holistic and interdisciplinary perspective, and the circulation of his concepts. By revisiting his work and that of his disciples, it examines his impact and relevance in the face of current ecological problems and the need to revise urban planning.
